So how did everyone end up acquiring all their 1337 uber items in D2   Did you MF for hours on end? Use bots to farm Meph? Buy on 3rd party sites?

I would have to say my claim to financial fame came from taking advantage of the D2 market.  I never bought things from 3rd party sites (I was in middle school and too young, and I just felt it was cheating a little), so I had to acquire all my items from the game.  The way I gained most of my wealth was by taking advantage of the D2 market.  At some point, probably around 1.10, there was a dual leech ring (I forget it's name) that was believed to be worth between 2 and 3 SoJ, depending on who was buying and who was selling.  I acquired a few, then I would sell them for 3 SoJ each.  I would go back to the market, buy up as many as I could for 2 SoJ each, then resell and $$$$$.

I made some pretty good money this way, but my greatest financial score was with my Ith bow.  This was at the height of their value in D2, when they were first hacked into the system.  I didn't have nearly enough SoJs to buy one (their market value was somewhere around 100 SoJ) but I desperately wanted one.  I happened to come across a wealthy D2 player who had become somewhat of a collector, and was willing to trade me one of his Ith bows for an old school Light Sabre.  I went off searching, and found one for about 15 SoJ.  Went back, made the deal, and boy was I happy.  I enjoyed it for quite a while, and then decided to sell.  I sold the Ith bow on the market for 120 SoJ, so I made a hefty profit :P

Lastly, a little brain teaser for you all.  If I have an Ith bow worth 120 SoJ, and I find someone who is willing to pay 120 SoJ, how do we go about trading it so that no one has the possibility of getting scammed?

I became rich through trading and influential friends :)
Mostly I obtained orders coming from 3rd party sites, which some of my friends had.
Nice profit if you recieve a highrune for getting a shako ;)

A friend who quit gave me a load of stuff, which I then started trading. Also had some luck with item drops, but I pretty much traded for my fortune.

I played D2 since the begining, so i became rich, with characters with full stacks of legits Stones of Jordan doing this :

First of all you needed a lot of money, that was very easy to do farming cows or inferno, or selling yellow crap from Mephitso ( I will speak about Mephisto later)  With all that money, Its time to gamble, for example with Gheed in Act 1. Then here comes the trick. Because the Nagelring and the Manald were unique rings and there cant drop 2 in the same, and the only unique rings in D2 vanilla were Nagelring and Manald, once you get the Manald and the Nagelring with a character (very easy because those were not so rare at all) the next unique ring was going to be a Stone of Jordan 100% guarantee.

So you just needed to gamble all the rings you´ll see from the vendor. ¿Bad luck? Go out of town and reset the vendor, buy all the rings again, and repeat. Most of the rings were crap, but from time to time you always ended buying a Stone of Jordan. The average was about 6 Stone of Jordan at day, counting gold farming at all, wich was not bad i guess...

You could do this with every Unique item in gambling, so it was a very easy way to get all uniques, like Silks, Frostburn, Magefist, etc...

¿Farming Yellow?  As easy as having some % Magic Find, a nova sorc with teleport, and maphack... And you could do a full Mephisto run in less than a minute... Way faster than diablo.

Later things changed, and with the expansion things changed too much. But i was already very very rich so i didnt cared too much :D

And thats my full story ^_^

Mostly browsing all sorts of trading forums and joining random trading games. I've gotten some crazy deals from people who had no idea what they had.

i say co op was the best way to get gear
if you had a group of 8 ppl with different builds, you could doe baalruns and make an mf kill at the end
thay way all the good grops will be of use
ofcource you need to start of with mefi to get some basic gear
but you could only get skillers from baal and nilathak i think
