I'm almost positive there is another thread about this exact topic, but searching for a bit yielded nothing, so.

I'd have to say I'm really disappointed in the way Blizzard has designed the public chat system.  For those who haven't played, when logged on, but not playing in a game, you remain in your account window.  If you wish to chat, there is a small chat window on the right.  You can choose public chat rooms, but when you join, battle.net merely logs you into the chat room, and tells you how many people are currently logged into that room.  You can't see other players, or their characters.  It's nothing like Diablo 2.

I, for one, would like to see a new rendition of the chat rooms we saw in D2.  For instance, if I choose to join a public chat, I'd like at least half of my screen (preferable the right side), to fill up with a chat window, where I can see everyone's character at the bottom that is also logged into that chat room, much like we saw in D2.  The character portrayed at the bottom will simply be the character that is chosen at the moment.  I think this would provide much more engaging public chat.

I'm sure Blizzard has designed chat this way to discourage bots and spamming, which was horrendous in D2, but rather than limit your players, put more effort into restricting bots.

I've never played SC2, but I've gotten the impression that this is also the case over there.

I agree. I really dislike the chat system. Hell, I dislike the party and friend system also, too buggy and confusing. +1

Who thinks the reason they're are doing this is to discourage people from trading in game and to encourage trading through the auction house so that Blizzard can get a cut?  (Does Blizzard take a cut from the gold auction house?)

I find the overall interface to be rather, hastily made. Don't like the game joining system either, its a bit too random and uncontrollable. But definitely agree with you on the Chat interface, weak and coming from Blizzard it feels like steps backward.

Hopefully it's a temporary look. I can't imagine people dealing with it once retail is out.

I liked the channels like they were in WC3 and SC1.

IMO b.net 2.0 is just a step backwards.

I also liked to search from a list of games, and personal hosting, instead of everything handled by the server.

I don't think so, most of the Black Market is on other forums.

I hope it's temporary also, however they cbf to fixing it pre-release.

First of all, there is no black market.  It's just one solid market that uses either real money or gold. Unless by "black market" you mean items traded by money but not through Blizzard.  In this case, the entire black market would be on forums, not most of it. Second, this doesn't really address my question.  Blizzard can't do anything about people trading on forums, but they can do something about preventing efficient trades through ingame.  If they don't provide a trade window like we had in D2 then that makes it pretty difficult and discouraging to trade ingame.  By ingame I mean actually within a game, not just in the D3 client.

What is the major difference/flaw in being at the character select screen in the trade chat window, then logging in game once you find the person ? Other than you're attempting to do two things at once, if that is the case why not use the AH ?

I personally am all for chat channels, but you're upset the bike comes with training wheels, but not the tassels.

The difference is that Blizzard will take upwards of 10% of the winning bid price as their fee for the auction house.  If you traded ingame, there would be no fee.
