A barbarian is the obvious tank because of his life leech abilities and all the defence skills/passives he can have.
But . . . . The Monk does have skills/passives good for tanking like:
Mantra of Healing (for nice self heals)
Blinding flash (to blind the monsters and some nice runes to make the enemies weaker or miss more)
Breath of Heaven (another self heal)
Serenity (Like a 3 second WoW Paladin Bubble + some very nice other effects when runed)
Mantra of Evasion (More dodge change for you is good)
So in short it looks like the Barbarian and the Monk are equally as good for thanking. But they do it in 2 very different ways.
The Barbarian does it by being a human meat shield and soaks up the hits with high armour and nice abilities.
The Monk tanks through the use of magical abilities that shield him and give him a better survival rate through things like more dodge etc. And the monk have some good self heals too.
So if you want to equate this to WoW roughly in terms of tanking.
Barbarian = Protection Warrior
Monk = Protection (or holy) Paladin
Which class is better at tanking Monk or Barbarian

My guess is the allmighty Barbarian good old stuff
for me Monk is more a backup healing / dmg dealer. But cant say yet until we see the game it self and how it will go spesiali after Normal.

i think the monk is the better tank since spells scala of lvl and weapon dmg.
ex: you have a monk with 20k hp and 60 in all res and 500 defence
then you have a barb with 30k hp and 75 ina ll res and 800 defence
then the monk with win just beacuse of his 15k+ heal you dont define a tank on how much hp or def or res he have but the ability to take dmg and stay alive for longest time, then the monk would easy win he can more or less gain full hp every 15 sencond also the heal is AoE so i would 100% rather have a monk tank then a barb tank just saying.

Barbs because of their shouts. Decrease damage and raise defense? Awesome! And they have a skill thats only activated once they get hit, MADE TO TANK! Also, they have great tanking passives.
Take a look at this build by TLS, awesome build made for tanking. as long as you have other members in your group, which I assume you would, considering you are becoming a tank.

I'd prefer a barbarian as a tank, he's got lots of armor and could withstand taking damage. However every class can take things on its own

i know right ^-^
it have massive AoE heal very tanky give good buffs also if some1 close to death it can shield and instanst heal it can pull enemys towards it self more or less taunt have around 30-46% dodge with out items, also only need to focus 1 res so just get max 1 res and you have max in all res and with the dex to armor you can get a lot of dmg with also armor

he is not strange. while tanking a skill rich boss rather than barb. monk will be the lifesaver. mantra of evasion with armor bonus rune and one with everything will solve the problem where the barb. lacks at tanking.

you guys considered the wd to do pet tanking? i think that will work just as good maybe even better

I'd go with the barbarian for sure. Plus, I prefer that class over monk anyways.

Go with the Barb. Monk youll get the auras, well 1 at the time maybe he could be a provider more likely. Id choose Barb over Monk anyday.

hard to say yet, but ideally you'll want to stack both aura's and shouts
